More thorough than inspirational, this book is still an invaluable reference on the traditional art and architecture of South-East Asia. The book feels unusually dated for only being published 17 years ago, but the wealth of information on South-East Asian Art more than. Southeast Asian arts, the literary, performing, and visual arts of Southeast gh the cultural development of the area was once dominated by Indian influence, a number of cohesive traits predate the Indian influence.
Wet-rice (or padi) agriculture, metallurgy, navigation, ancestor cults, and worship associated with mountains were both indigenous and widespread, and certain art forms. The layout of both "South Southeast" and "The Unguarded Moment" is I believe the pinnacle of book design. Images are presented one at a time in a horizontal fashion (notice the cover on amazon is displayed horizontally) and never as a double page spread (which I find ruins photographs due to the book spine being in the middle of them)/5(28).
